How to maintain your ethical clothing?

on

Properly maintaining your ethical clothing is essential to extend their lifespan and maximize their positive environmental impact .
Are you already committed to a responsible approach?
Do you want to keep your clothes for a long time?

Here are some tips for maintaining your ethical clothing, made from natural fibers (or not):

Follow the washing instructions : The brand is obliged to note the washing instructions on the clothing label or at least inform you of the specifics of washing the clothing. These instructions are designed to ensure proper washing without damaging the fabric or shrinking the garment.

Wash at low temperature : Use low temperature wash cycles (30°C/40°C or less). This saves energy while preserving the colors and texture of fabrics.

Use gentle and ecological detergents : Opt for gentle and ecological detergents without harsh chemicals that could harm textile fibers and the environment. The little extra: even do your own ecological laundry !

Avoid over-washing : Don't wash your ethical clothes after each use, unless they are really dirty. Overwashing can cause premature wear of fabrics. Certain fibers such as cotton and hemp are antibacterial, which allows the clothing to be worn several times. The tip: let your garment air dry so you can wear it a second time.

Favor drying in the open air : Dry clothes in the open air rather than in the dryer. Air drying is gentler on fabrics and reduces energy consumption. Overheating a natural fiber is not the best idea for keeping clothes longer.

Repair rather than throw away : If an item of clothing is damaged, try to repair it rather than throw it away. Sewing an unstitched hem or repairing a small hole can significantly extend the life of the garment. You can find neighborhood associations that help you upgrade/repair your clothing!

Protect delicate clothing : Delicate clothing, such as lace or silk, requires special care. Wash them by hand or in a wash bag to protect delicate fabrics.

Avoid bleaching products : Avoid using bleaching products that can damage fabric fibers and cause environmental damage.

Donate or resell unused clothes : Rather than throwing away clothes you no longer use, donate them to charities or thrift stores to give them a new life.

By following these tips, your ethical clothing will always be at its best and you will be able to enjoy it and share it for longer!

Beyond the energy resource, the question of water consumption also comes up in the maintenance of your clothing.
The fashion industry consumes water to manufacture clothing (production of raw materials, processing of raw materials, spinning of fabrics, processing of fabrics, production of clothing, transport, etc.), which is why Ethical fashion brands are turning to solutions that have less impact on water consumption (local and/or nearby raw materials, organic fabrics, small production, etc.)
At your level, when caring for your clothing, you can apply certain tips such as avoiding over-washing to reduce your water consumption, washing at low temperature, etc.

If you want to know more about water consumption by the fashion industry, the consequences and the solutions, I recommend the podcast Couture Apparente , which deals with this subject on the use of water
